Augments, Augments Everywhere!

Dan Cole

Wow, didn't realize it has been almost two weeks! NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month has been taking a lot of my free time. For those of you who are unaware, NaNoWriMo is a challenge to write 50,000 words in the month of November. Yeah, that's a lot. 1,667 words/day. I find I can usually bang this out in an hour, hour and a half once I get in the grove. Last year I did the rewrite of Hundred Dollar Heroes as I realized I just wasn't happy with the first try. I ended up completely changing the story and went from a completely team book to focusing mostly on Purge and his introduction to the Heroes. Since then I had been working on the sequel to Lani: The Girl Without Fear, so for NaNo 2019, I decided on jumping right into Hundred Dollar Heroes 2! I tried planning out some basics and just going for it, which has worked out well so far, at the time of writing this I'm on pace at 28,694 words. Phew. So I'm sure you can understand why the blog has taken a bit of a backseat for the last few weeks.

Either way, the plan was to discuss Augments today, so here we go!

Augments, or Augs sometimes, are humans with alien DNA segments that give them weird, and sometimes amazing, powers. Purge, Haka, Prism, and Psion are all Augments in this respect. Implant is an Augment in that his body has been modified cybernetically, but his DNA is 100% human.

Augment's are new to the world, even more so than aliens. After First Contact and the myriad alien species were living on Earth, a lot of people got jealous. It started innocent enough- people began dying their skin to look alien, surgically grafting new parts on their bodies like fins or antennae. Quickly it became malicious and deadly. People began abducting aliens for their parts and/or stealing their DNA.

One group in particular ended up changing the human race forever, Mutatis Mutandis. This group developed a serum that would attack a person's DNA specifically in their sex cells, mutating any potential offspring. The worst part of this systematic attack was that it wasn't immediately predictable as it didn't change the initial victims, but their children.

Soon babies were born with all kinds of abilities. Some were immediately obvious, others, like Psion's mind powers were more subtle.

Decades later Augments are an accepted part of society, living alongside humans and aliens alike.

There we have it! A primer on Augments and what they are.

I think I'm going to leave it open for next time, see what strikes my fancy. Hopefully it isn't nearly two weeks before the next entry!
